A Look At Busan Lotte World Tower

A Look At Busan Lotte World Tower

We briefly mentioned our involvement in the Busan Lotte World Tower, located in Busan, South Korea, but we wanted to once again highlight this incredible tower. The skyscraper, upon completion, will become the 6th tallest building in the world.

The Busan Lotte World Tower is expected to become the new gateway to East Asia. It will stand at over 510 meters, 1,674 ft, and will consist of 6.3 million square feet of mixed-use space.  At the center of the new Busan Lotte Town, the tower is expected to be completed by 2016.

As you can see the design of the tower resembles that of a “standing ship, with grand curves reflecting the city’s harbour.” The underground parking under the Busan Lotte World Tower will be able to hold over 2,400 cars.

According to Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), the architecture firm that designed the tower, “The tower’s shape and massing are driven by the compact site, the complex program, the desire to optimize views, and strict structural requirements. Tower setbacks occur at transitions between major program components and are arranged with a clock-wise spin to animate the façades. Concrete outrigger walls transfer perimeter column loads to six mega-columns, allowing each tier to have an independent column layout appropriate for its function. Environmental sustainability features of the tower include natural ventilation, thermal regulation, double skin, louvers, and a sea-water cooling system.”

We enjoyed working with the team at SOM on this monumental design!
