Equestrian Master Planning: Part One

Over the years Vertical Arts has had the opportunity to master plan and design equestrian and ranch facilities for clients around Colorado. Designing a ranch or an equestrian property takes special planning for both the human and animal client. After a detailed site inventory and analysis of the property has been completed and the clients’ program has been identified, our design team can begin preparing conceptual land use plans. The land use plans will identify the best locations for the proposed program uses based on existing site conditions and the working functions of the property. Below is a list of key site conditions to be aware of when land planning ranch and equestrian facilities: PREVAILING WINDS – Identify the location of the prevailing winds in relationship to stable and stable waste locations. If possible use other accessory buildings or existing topography to protect the stables form the prevailing winds. SITE TOPOGRAPHY – Study the existing topography to find the best locations for buildings and riding arenas. Remember that additional grading will need to occur around barns, stables and arenas for maintenance and ground preparation. The proposed riding arena surface can require an additional eight to ten inches of over excavation. EXISTING SITE VEGETATION – Identify all existing vegetation on the property. Any plant species that are toxic to animals shall be removed. Mature vegetation should be protected and used for wind breaks and shade.
