Beyond Tubs and Tiles: 4 Bathroom Design Trends That Add Value

Creating a beautiful, serene and spa-like bathroom experience comes down to the details.

When it comes to designing a beautiful and functional home, the bathroom deserves as much attention as any other space. At Vertical Arts, we believe good design goes beyond selecting the right tile patterns or fixtures – it’s about those beautiful, smaller details that enhance the overall experience.

In today’s homes, the bathroom is no longer a utilitarian space. It’s a place for rejuvenation, reflection, and retreat. Our approach to bathroom design is driven by the space first – how you want it to perform and feel – and then to find those materials and other features that enhance it.

Here are four design strategies we’re using to elevate bathroom spaces and create lasting value for our clients.

1. Let Lighting Set the Tone

Good lighting is one of the most powerful and often overlooked design tools. The right lighting plan doesn’t just make a space functional; it shapes how the room feels throughout the day and enhances the space’s beauty.

Our experts focus on layered lighting, which allows the bathroom to change with your mood or the time of day. Task lighting is important at the vanity, while surrounding ambient lighting adds softness and warmth. Under-cabinet tape lights, dimmable recessed fixtures, and statement sconces allow you to adjust the vibe, whether you’re getting ready for your day or winding down for the night.

2. Embrace the Outdoors

Incorporating natural light and connecting with the outdoors are key elements of our design approach. Whether it’s a door that opens onto an adjacent patio, a small window, or even a strategically placed skylight, bathrooms that have a connection to nature feel more open, airy, and inviting.

We love to frame mountain views or introduce indoor-outdoor connections, such as private garden patios off the bathroom. These details not only expand the visual space but also foster a sense of calm and connection to the surrounding environment. If adding a window isn’t possible, we love to use creative lighting solutions, such as backlit mirrors or sconces, that mimic natural light.

3. Prioritize Smart, Integrated Storage

Clutter is the enemy of calm. That’s why thoughtful storage solutions are at the heart of our bathroom designs. We create bathrooms that support your everyday routine by seeking ways to integrate functional yet beautiful storage that keeps everyday essentials out of sight, maintaining a spa-inspired feel.

Some of our favorite ways to do this are with built-in drawers instead of deep cabinets, recessed shower niches, docking drawers for hair styling tools, and concealed medicine cabinets behind mirrored panels. Every item has its place, allowing the space to remain clean, simple, and serene.

4. Layer in Rich Colors, Textures and Materials

Our 2025 design forecast predicts a return to richness, and the bathroom is the perfect place to embrace it. Adding depth through color and texture will elevate the space from purely functional to one that is thoughtfully refined.

We’re designing 2025 spaces with natural stone, warm wood tones, handcrafted tiles, and rich color hues to create spaces that feel warm, grounded, and personal. Materials like matte black fixtures, unlacquered brass, or custom millwork introduce a tactile element, while soft, layered textiles, such as linen window treatments and fabric stools, add a sense of luxury.

For more personality, we love using fun accents like wallpaper and colorful tile. Even in a minimalist bathroom, these layered details make you feel good in your own retreat space.

At Vertical Arts, we believe in focusing on thoughtful details and purposeful materials to design homes and spaces for our clients that are beautiful, luxurious, and functional.
