Form or Function?
We recently read an article in The Financial Times titled “The balance between form and function”. It reminded us of Louis Sullivan, the father of modernism, who coined the phrase “form ever follows function”. Every architecture firm faces this battle when taking on a new project. You need to be able to create something that is both architecturally pleasing and functional. There are structures out there that are truly works of art, but they aren’t conducive to working or living. Every architect has their own formula, some lean more towards function while others believe form is more important. When you find the balance you have truly reached nirvana.
Another famous architect once said “Form follows function – that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.”
-Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959)
