Beyond Barn Basics: The Art of Equestrian Interior Design

This is the third blog post in our series detailing the planning, design and building of equestrian facilities. You can read about planning your equestrian estate here, the architectural design behind equestrian facilities here, and find more information about our equestrian services here.

Caretaker

When designing an equestrian facility, we balance functionality and style with the needs of the horses and owners.

Interior design in equestrian facilities is a delicate balance of technical precision, functional requirements, and personal style, weaving together the practical needs of horses with the aesthetic desires of their owners. Creating the perfect space requires precise attention to detail.

At Vertical Arts, our team helps navigate complex functional requirements while carefully coordinating finishes, lighting, and flooring to create spaces that are as practical as they are beautiful.

The Complexity of Equestrian Interiors

Technical elements play a crucial role in designing equestrian interiors. Details such as specialty lighting for grooming areas, strategically placed hose reels, dedicated drying stations, and precisely positioned cameras and fans are far more than mere afterthoughts—they are integral components of a well-designed equestrian facility.

Viewing Area Living Room

This caretaker area is warm and inviting, with durable leather pieces and a comforting fireplace.

Equally important are the human-scaled environments that make these spaces truly livable. Tack rooms, viewing areas, and caretaker gathering zones need to feel simultaneously professional and comfortable. We strive to create spaces that are inviting while maintaining a cohesive connection to the broader equine environment.

Our designs often leverage neutral color palettes, exploring the rich interplay between whites and dark browns. We carefully select incredibly durable and aesthetically pleasing materials, understanding that these spaces must withstand the rigors of daily use while maintaining their visual beauty.

Three Projects, Three Design Approaches

Our team has navigated the intricate world of equestrian interior design across multiple projects, each telling a unique story of balance between functionality and style.

At Fortuna Farm, functionality was the cornerstone of our approach. Every design decision centered on maximizing utility, with a focus on creating an efficient environment where every square foot served a purpose. Everything was thoughtfully designed, from the strategic placement of water sources, carefully mapped feeder and stall systems, and the optimized circulation for caretakers.

Perry Park Ranch represented a harmonious blend of practical needs and design aspirations. Here, we demonstrated how interior design can integrate technical elements seamlessly, creating specialized zones that support both horse and handler. The tack room featured custom saddle holders, while carefully positioned grooming supply nooks and strategically placed cameras and ventilation systems transformed the space from merely functional to truly intelligent. A live-in caretaker suite and a viewing area balanced the refinement of the space with functional needs.

Every detail – from the lighting to the fans, to the design of each horse stall – seamlessly blends functionality and style.

River Ranch Barn showcased a more refined approach, where the barn interior told a cohesive story. The woodsy, rustic interior flowed naturally from the barn to tack room, with an upstairs lounge that felt both sophisticated and connected to the equine spaces. We made deliberate choices that prioritized visual appeal, even foregoing auto-feeders to maintain a cleaner, more intentional aesthetic.

For example, the barn aisle pavers complemented the seamless aesthetic and were thoughtfully selected to complement the horses’ hooves. Each horse stall features custom-crafted gates of iron rod and rustic wood paneling, providing both security and style. The attention to detail even extends to the tack room, where carefully chosen lighting fixtures blend functionality with rustic charm.

The upper level transforms into an elegant entertainment space, where the rustic aesthetic takes on a more refined character. Expansive sliding doors frame the sweeping views of the ranch below, while thoughtful amenities like a well-appointed laundry room and guest facilities ensure practicality isn’t sacrificed for style. Throughout the design, each element strikes a deliberate balance between a working stable and a gathering space.

We approach each project as a story waiting to be told. Whether it’s the no-nonsense practicality of Fortuna Farm, the balanced approach of Perry Park Ranch, or the refined aesthetic of River Ranch, we understand that every equestrian facility has its own unique narrative. Our job is to help you tell that story through thoughtful, intelligent design that honors both the horses and the humans who care for them.
