A Texan Family’s Year-Round Escape

When the owners of Meadow Mountain Retreat first came to Steamboat Springs, it was because of the skiing, and it wasn’t until they finally experienced the Yampa Valley in summer that the idea of a permanent home took hold. The newly constructed home was recently featured in Mountain Living, where the owner recalled the moment it clicked: “When you come to Steamboat in the summer, you think, ‘Why am I not here all the time?’”

That feeling became the model for the 7,100-square-foot retreat that blends the formal, tailored sensibility of Texas traditional style with the tactile, rustic character of a Colorado mountain home. The result is a sophisticated escape built around the two things the owners love most: sweeping views and gathering the people they love.

Rotated 45 degrees into the hillside, the home opens to sunset views down the valley.

Sitting Toward the Sunset

The most important design decision happened before a single wall went up. The property offered a remarkable sunset view down the valley. To capture it, our team rotated the home 45 degrees into the hillside, opening the primary living spaces toward town, the meadow and the pond beyond.

“That was the immediate and most important siting element,” explains partner and architect Sarah Tiedeken O’Brien. “We took a lot of care to make the house feel private and capture the exceptional view corridors.”

The angle did double duty, carving out a sheltered enclave at the back of the property that could serve as a private retreat complete with a secluded patio, an in-ground hot tub and multiple fire features.

Artwork, lighting and a craftsman staircase bring the entry way together.

Texan Tradition meets colorado craft

Step through the front door and the home announces itself with a custom floating staircase, anchored by a slab of onyx below and crowned by a sculptural Ochre chandelier suspended more than 30 feet overhead. It is, by design, a moment of wonder.

From there, the design settles into a quiet neutral but deeply textural palette that’s formal but warm. White limestone keeps the vaulted spaces light and airy against oversized rustic beams overhead. The finishes of aged stone, patinated hardware and unlacquered brass will only grow richer with wear and age. One material is truly one of a kind – the show-stopping dark gray, hand-cut Montana midnight limestone quarried that wraps the interiors.

“The spaces are neutral but textural,” says interior designer Makenzie Houghton. The owner’s love of a natural, organic palette is set against more formal casework and a generous use of velvet including living room chairs upholstered in rich emerald with walnut burl backs.

Sliding pocket doors let three walls of the great room disappear for a true indoor-outdoor experience.

Built for bringing people together

The owners’ vision centered on entertaining, and the home’s plan flows accordingly. The vaulted great room sits at the heart of the house, opening seamlessly into the kitchen and dining area, where a generous island anchors custom whitewashed cabinetry, quartzite countertops and a bronzy metal hood.

The real magic happens when the weather is fine. Large sliding pocket doors allow three walls of the main living space to disappear entirely, dissolving the line between indoors and out. “We live outside all summer long,” said the owner. “We have a pizza oven, and when the kids come, they’re always begging for a pizza night.”

Main living spaces seamlessly bring everyone together.

Room for everyone

Below the main level, hospitality takes over. A central recreation room pairs a wet bar with a full golf simulator, while three guest suites are designed to feel like a resort getaway that each have its own character, from suede wallpaper to herringbone tile and marble baths, and a direct connection to a patio or deck. A separate bunk room sleeps eight, with four queen beds and a roll-down projector screen for movie nights.

Throughout, the home is tailored to the way this family actually lives: a dedicated mudroom for fly-fishing gear, a dog wash station and an upper-level office that opens to a private rooftop deck.
