Contemporary Alpine Escape
For these homeowners, building a full-time home in Steamboat Springs meant creating something that could hold its own against the landscape and that was architecturally bold, deeply personal and built to be lived in. The 7,800-square-foot result stuns with a composition of steel moment frames forming the main gables, heavy Douglas fir timber beams with custom bracket details and an extraordinary display of hand-sawn Montana stone that took more than a year to install.  Inside, the entryway and cantilevered stairwell draw the eye, with each tread individually welded behind the stone wall with no visible support. The kitchen anchors the main level with high-contrast clarity: dark slim-shaker cabinetry, a light quartzite backsplash and island countertop, reeded glass uppers and steel toe-kick and hood details that echo the fireplace metalwork throughout. A tailored built-in booth off the kitchen frames an unobstructed view across the Yampa Valley to the Flat Tops, while a see-through fireplace divides the formal living and dining spaces. The primary suite operates as its own private floor, centered on a three-sided fireplace open to both the bedroom and the spa bath. An elevated walkway connects to a dark teal-painted library and his-and-hers built-in desks above a sunken lounge space. The primary escape functions as a quiet counterpoint to the home’s more animated lower level, which houses an indoor/outdoor bar with an ice sink, a whiskey room painted the same deep teal, a rec room with pool table, a bunk room and a patio with fire pit, sauna and in-ground hot tub. Also downstairs, tailored guest suites feature slatted divider “screens” reminiscent of hotel rooms the homeowners enjoyed in Tulum, featuring mountain materials.  The interior design team worked carefully to ensure the home’s multiple wood tones felt harmonious rather than competing. Hickory floors with a cool blue undertone, vertical-grain hemlock ceilings, and Douglas fir beams were selected, while a connecting palette of chocolatey maroon, steely blue, warm caramel and grey that were drawn directly from the stone flows through every room. Tailored touches can be found throughout the home’s style, making it a true contemporary mountain getaway.
